Another interesting discussion tonight, which I only managed to catch the tail end of, sadly. Led by Tergen Sadofsky (on the left in the picture), one of the participants in last night’s talk, today’s discussion was a more general one on avatars and their “purpose”, if there is such a thing.
Some entertaining discussions ensued on the nature of avatar design - is it a means of “idealising” yourself, a means of expressing creativity, a means of escapism, a means of expressing yourself differently from how you are in the real world?
The answer, it seems, is “yes”. Avatar design means different things to different people. Some people design their avatar as an aid to roleplaying a character. Others (like me) design their avatars to resemble themselves. Others still change regularly as a means of self-expression and embracing their creativity. Buying avatar clothes and skins and designing the “perfect” avi is, to many people, just as creative an activity as what those who actually create those resources do.
