This picture illustrates one of the most awesome things about SL - the diversity. And I’m not talking about the wet-headed, politically-correct nonsense that’s in The Big Book of Management-Speak… I’m talking about genuine diversity here. Uniqueness. People being entirely, 100% different from one another.
This photo was taken during another discussion at The Village run by the lovely Lizzie Gudkov. This one was on the subject of consumerism in Second Life, so there were some crossover issues with our previous talk about money in the world.
Opinions are split on the question of money in SL. Some see it as a necessity to reward creators’ hard work. Others may come to SL based on “business-related” articles, telling utopian “success stories” of people who have made it big in SL, while others (like myself) enjoy spending Lindens on things for their avi because they don’t spend that much on themselves in RL. Or maybe they do. (I don’t.)
But one thing’s true. Many people are willing to spend money to be unique. Look at the people here. From the realistic to the fantastic to the downright outlandish, everyone has a “look” that they want to show to the world - and if it involves spending some money to do that, people are quite happy to do so.
